Gathering friends and family together around the table to enjoy fresh seafood that’s been spread out on brown paper – and all the fun, laughs and excitement that goes with it – has always been a favorite time for me. It has created some of my most treasured memories, it’s something I’ve done all my life, and has become a cherished tradition with both family & friends. A tradition that inspired me to create a successful, growing business that allows me to bring the joy of this experience to others.

Since the opening of our first store on Topsail Island in 2017, I have been building a business that makes gathering to enjoy fresh seafood fun and easy.

Over the past 5 years, we’ve learned a lot about running our business. We have used all of that learning to develop our franchise program – a blueprint for a rewarding business with the strength of the Topsail Steamer business model – and without many of the risks, expenses and frustrations of starting from scratch.

I love how Topsail Steamer has enabled me to work with my family, contribute to local communities, and make a difference in the lives of our customers and employees. One of the most rewarding parts of owning Topsail Steamer is thinking about all the joy, fun, love and tradition that has been shared around a Topsail Steamer meal. I’m excited for others to have the opportunity to enjoy those same benefits as part of the Steamer Family.

Danielle Mahon, Founder and CEO of Topsail Steamer, spent summers with her family and friends on the southern Jersey Shore, where she developed a great love for fresh seafood. In 2003, Danielle and her family relocated to North Carolina, eventually putting down roots on Topsail Island.

Danielle spent the next 10 years working in biotech before going on a girl’s weekend with the family in 2016, where the concept for Topsail Steamer was born. For Danielle, the timing seemed right to begin the journey she had always dreamed of – the journey of following in her father’s entrepreneurial footsteps and starting a business of her own. She and her husband were preparing to send their youngest child to college, and the soon-to-be empty-nesters were more than ready to move from Raleigh to Topsail. In no time at all, Danielle quit her job in corporate America, moved to the beach, and opened Topsail Steamer in Surf City in March 2017.

High customer enthusiasm and strong first year sales paved the way for Topsail Steamer to open a second location in neighboring Wrightsville Beach in May 2018. By fall of 2021, Topsail Steamer had 6 open locations in 3 states.

Topsail Steamer is a family-run operation, where Danielle’s daughter, Emily, and son, Jimmy, work along with other family members to offer customers three unwavering commitments: quality, convenience and an unforgettable experience that’s meant to be shared with family & friends. For those near the beach or not, Topsail Steamer provides the fun of a delicious, beach-inspired seafood feast.

Topsail Steamer is unique and doesn’t fit into the take-out or fast casual segments. However, over the past few years, consumers have become open to and even searching out alternatives to the traditional “dine in restaurants” that provide high quality, healthy food options.

What we are looking for in a Topsail Steamer owner/operator:

  • Experience in business, management or sales
  • Passion for the Topsail Steamer brand & experience
  • High energy, kind, positive, sense of excellence
  • Locally connected in their markets

Franchise requirements:

  • Minimum net worth $400,000
  • Investment range $206,000-$332,000 (includes tenant improvement and franchise fee)
  • Franchise fee $50,000
  • Royalty and Marketing fees: 7% royalty, up to 1.5% brand advertising, 1% local marketing (minimum)
  • Term of Franchise Agreement : 10 years

  • High visibility and high foot traffic
  • 550-1200 square foot store
  • Nearby quick-service food concepts such as doughnuts, baked goods, ice cream, bagels, breakfast, and pizza
  • Nearby high-traffic retail such as surf shops, gift shops, and candy stores
  • Easy parking for pick up
